Background |
The term "romanticism" was first coined in the 1700's by the English. The uprising of Romanticism corresponded with the surge of interest in folklore, ethnic, and cultural origins. This was a time of revolt, independence and self-expression. This movement was very prominent in the European countries along with the Americas.
This movement lasted from the mid 18th century to the final stages of the 19th century. The main idea of Romanticism was to revolt against an established order of things, rules, laws, dogmas, and Classicism -- especially Neoclassicism. The movement aimed to focus on imagination, emotions, intuition, and passion. Rather than focusing on logic and reason, they wanted to capture real human emotion. Romantic artists also had deep interest in the mystic and the supernatural. |
Interesting FactsRomantic artists often associated nature with man. Nature was seen as both an extension of the many human personalities and like a human, a vessel for a spirit.
